Most of the times we had seen the concept only in Hollywood like in the movie series, Twilight and the web series called The Vampire Diaries. The concept of vampires is quite popular among the teenagers,as for them vampires are not fictitious entities and real beings. The admiration for vampires, from the very beginning, has always been high among the young adults.

It has actually been a long time since we heard or watched vampires on screen in the Bengali movie industry. Thus, finally the myth of vampires in the fictitious world of Bengali movie industry is not going to be a myth anymore.

The Journey of Decades

Art has existed in this world from time immemorial . A very special form of art is acting. And when we say acting in the Indian context, only one name comes to our mind and that is our beloved BOLLYWOOD.

The first ever bollywood film, The Flower of Persia, made by Hiralal Sen, was a film of scenes depicting a film presentation by Professor Stevenson on a stage show at Calcutta’s Star. Dadasaheb Phalke’s silent Raja Harishchandra in 1913 is the first feature film made in India. The first ever Indian sound film was Alam Ara by Ardeshir Irani. From then, there has been no stopping for bollywood. It has taken leaps with time and evolved more and more each time.

While each and every child of our generation must have been for once a part of the never ending quarrel with their parents, about whether the 90s or the 20s movies are better, we decided why not draw a comparison between the both. We mean, the movies and content have changed a lot with the changing decades.

  • The Hero

The main part of the bollywood movies has always been the hero. The lover, saviour with all the possible good qualities available, he is the one every boy admires to become. The 90s was the era of our chocolate lover boys Shah Rukh Khan, Amir Khan, Salman Khan, Ajay Devgan, Govinda and many more dancing in different exotic foreign location, doing crazy stuffs which were a little hard to believe. The 20s hero is more like any other boy, with his set of insecurities, flaws and struggle. He is not restricted to one single genre and fits into every mould. He does not believe in the stereotypes of the society. Some of the most remarkable actors of the 20s are Ranbir Singh, Shaheed Kapoor, Vicky Kaushal, Imran Khan, Ayushmann Khuranna, RajkumarRao, etc. Some of the heroes who have been an unforgettable part of both the 90s and 20s are Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bacchan, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Saif Ali Khan, etc.

  • The Heroine

Another inevitable part of the bollywood movies is the Hindi heroine. While the early decades, saw the heroine as a timid, shy, sati-savitri girl, there was some change with the onset of the 90s. The bubly and ambitious girl dreaming of living her life on her terms was introduced in the 90s by some of the finest actress like Madhuri Dixit, Karisma Kapoor, Kajaol, Sridevi, Manisha Koirala, Tabu, Raveena Tandaon, Juhi Chawla, etc. The heroine of the 20s came out as a rebel, who loved her life the way it was and was seen making trend-setting decisions. She refused to live on the terms of the society. Some of the most revolutionary actress of 20s are Tapsee Pannu, Rani Mukherjee, Bhumi Pednekar, Alia Bhatt, Vidya Balan, Deepika Padukone, Kangana Ranaut, etc.

  • The Villian

The Villian who was an integral part of the bollywood movies with time has somehow died a natural death. While even in the 90s there were dedicated actors playing villians in the movie, the 20s approach towards villian has changed with many lead characters playing the role of antagonists. The Villians from being in the black side have now shifted to the grey side.

  • The Songs

Bollywood movies stand incomplete without its songs. While the 90s was the era of some deep, meaningful, quirky songs with beautiful lyrics, it is seldom to be found in the songs of 20s. The latest songs are only the remakes of the old songs and the sense of creativity stands lost.

  • Scripts

While the 90s was the era of love stories, the 20s script is not just stuck to it. There have been revolutionary scripts of social evils and daily life dilemmas which some very strong characters in it.

All in all, there has been a great shift in the style of bollywood movies produced during the 90s and the 20s. But yet, each one has its own essence and we love it. So be its 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s or even the 2050s, Bollywood will always manage be sure a very special place in our hearts.

While Article 377 has been decriminalized by the Indian government, accepting homosexuality is  still a very big question for all. Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan is the first bollywood movie where the love story of two men is depicted. The movie has opened well in the box office and is expected to do a good business.

Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan, directed by Hitesh Kewalya, is set in the present time setup where Kartik and Aman, two young men are in love with each other. The movie shows their struggle of coming out as gays and making their families and society understand that love does not come with terms and conditions and that homosexuality is not a disease.

The movie is hilarious and provides you with punches every time. There is a stark contrast between the personalities of the main leads. While Kartik has come out in open about his sexuality and lest his family for it, Aman is still skeptical and scared to accept it. If you ask us, the character of Kartik was fearless but at certain times who would loose the connect. On the other hand, Aman’s character is more believable and connects well with the audience as it shows the dilemmas of the mind.

In the movie, Gajraj Rao and Neena Gupta play the role of parents of Aman. Manu Rishi and Sunita Rajwar play the parts of Aman’s uncle and aunt and Maanvi Gagroo can be seen in the role of Aman’s sister whose one eye is destroyed and she struggles to get married. All the characters have played their roles very well. The attraction of the movie stays the unique KAALI GOBI discovered by Aman’s father who is a Agricultural Scientist.

All in all the movie was pretty good and the director has tried to give a very strong message to the society about homosexuality through comedy. We need more such Indian mainstream movies which are not the regular drama but have something unconventional to portray. So with this, we say Bye to you for this week. We will be back with more such interesting content the next week. Till then, lots of love and

Stay Filmy!!!!

A DIVE INTO THE MYSTERIOUS INDUSTRY:-

As you all know that we had already entered the month of Love-February, and then we at SPINS are going to complete our 1 month of blogging in this very month. Isn’t that so amazing for us? It has been a complete rollercoaster ride for us as well as for you guys. On this very occasion we thought to do something new, something other than much appealing movies. So, this time we thought of taking you all back to those days when people used to get entertained by the medium which is portable (day by day becoming handy) and is very economic. Can you guys guess what is it?

Well, we won’t directly reveal the answer rather we will give you all a hint to think. So, what was the date yesterday? And what was the day called? Now, don’t think the day from the perspective of Valentines’ week. Just kidding. So, yesterday was 13th February and it is celebrated as WORLD RADIO DAY. Now all of us had got the answer, that what was the medium used then.

pic courtesy: music radio creative

Previously, there were no televisions as the invention was made much more later. There were radios and with the beginning of the “Radio Era”, people used to get much more advantages as well as getting entertained. “Akashvani” was first used in the context of radio and was later adopted as All India Radio on-air name in 1957. The programs which had entertained the masses then were certain radio dramas, music shows, news bulletins, etc.

pic courtesy: the wire

Radio dramas had created a great impact on the audiences as the visual aspect wasn’t there, leaving the space for speculations. The modulation of voice by the RJs and the storyline is all that had made the people to be enthusiast about it. The first radio drama was launched from the Kolkata station of AIR on the night of 3rd September of 1927. It was termed as “Micro-drama” by one of the researchers of radio plays broadcast to describe the programme. In the same year the Calcutta Amateur Theatrical Society had broadcast two English Language plays- “The Girl Who Wasn’t” by Ben Norton and “The Folly of George” by Mathew Bolton. The first radio play in Bengali is “Daye Pore Dargroho” written by Jyotirindra Thakur. Later radio dramas had been played in many languages like Sanskrit and Hindi as well.

Neither movies nor web series but still the essence of the radio dramas had always kept the audience hooked up to their channels. The art of listening was being celebrated the most. Today also there are people who love listening to the radio but thanks to our fast-moving life they aren’t able to lend their ears to the radio. As a result, the true aura of radio is slowly diminishing. Even then also the radio hasn’t lost its hopes as now the FM radio is already being made in-built in the mobile phones.  The amazing RJs of nowadays have again succeeded in driving the attention of the masses towards the radio.

So on this World Radio Day, we at SPINS want to thanks all those Radio Jockeys out there who are delivering such an amazing content to us with an equally amazing enthusiasm. Thank you all for keeping the spirit of radio still alive among the masses and motivating more free souls to choose their path into this “mysterious” industry.
