Art has existed in this world from time immemorial . A very special form of art is acting. And when we say acting in the Indian context, only one name comes to our mind and that is our beloved BOLLYWOOD.
The first ever bollywood film, The Flower of Persia, made by Hiralal Sen, was a film of scenes depicting a film presentation by Professor Stevenson on a stage show at Calcutta’s Star. Dadasaheb Phalke’s silent Raja Harishchandra in 1913 is the first feature film made in India. The first ever Indian sound film was Alam Ara by Ardeshir Irani. From then, there has been no stopping for bollywood. It has taken leaps with time and evolved more and more each time.
While each and every child of our generation must have been for once a part of the never ending quarrel with their parents, about whether the 90s or the 20s movies are better, we decided why not draw a comparison between the both. We mean, the movies and content have changed a lot with the changing decades.
- The Hero

The main part of the bollywood movies has always been the hero. The lover, saviour with all the possible good qualities available, he is the one every boy admires to become. The 90s was the era of our chocolate lover boys Shah Rukh Khan, Amir Khan, Salman Khan, Ajay Devgan, Govinda and many more dancing in different exotic foreign location, doing crazy stuffs which were a little hard to believe. The 20s hero is more like any other boy, with his set of insecurities, flaws and struggle. He is not restricted to one single genre and fits into every mould. He does not believe in the stereotypes of the society. Some of the most remarkable actors of the 20s are Ranbir Singh, Shaheed Kapoor, Vicky Kaushal, Imran Khan, Ayushmann Khuranna, RajkumarRao, etc. Some of the heroes who have been an unforgettable part of both the 90s and 20s are Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bacchan, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Saif Ali Khan, etc.
- The Heroine

Another inevitable part of the bollywood movies is the Hindi heroine. While the early decades, saw the heroine as a timid, shy, sati-savitri girl, there was some change with the onset of the 90s. The bubly and ambitious girl dreaming of living her life on her terms was introduced in the 90s by some of the finest actress like Madhuri Dixit, Karisma Kapoor, Kajaol, Sridevi, Manisha Koirala, Tabu, Raveena Tandaon, Juhi Chawla, etc. The heroine of the 20s came out as a rebel, who loved her life the way it was and was seen making trend-setting decisions. She refused to live on the terms of the society. Some of the most revolutionary actress of 20s are Tapsee Pannu, Rani Mukherjee, Bhumi Pednekar, Alia Bhatt, Vidya Balan, Deepika Padukone, Kangana Ranaut, etc.
- The Villian

The Villian who was an integral part of the bollywood movies with time has somehow died a natural death. While even in the 90s there were dedicated actors playing villians in the movie, the 20s approach towards villian has changed with many lead characters playing the role of antagonists. The Villians from being in the black side have now shifted to the grey side.
- The Songs
Bollywood movies stand incomplete without its songs. While the 90s was the era of some deep, meaningful, quirky songs with beautiful lyrics, it is seldom to be found in the songs of 20s. The latest songs are only the remakes of the old songs and the sense of creativity stands lost.
- Scripts
While the 90s was the era of love stories, the 20s script is not just stuck to it. There have been revolutionary scripts of social evils and daily life dilemmas which some very strong characters in it.
All in all, there has been a great shift in the style of bollywood movies produced during the 90s and the 20s. But yet, each one has its own essence and we love it. So be its 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s or even the 2050s, Bollywood will always manage be sure a very special place in our hearts.
